Downton's Under 14’s kicked off their new season with a home match against last season’s champions Braishfield Bees.
A much depleted squad doned a new kit and paid their respects to the late Ian Drinkwater before the game.
A slow start saw the Bees take the lead after 5 minutes with a fine strike from the edge of the box, soon to be followed by a through ball which allowed them to double their lead before 15 minutes. Downton then started to play football well and fashioned a chance after a cleared corner was put back into the box, but Stacey’s shot was straight at the keeper.
The Robins then got their goal after a long ball forward from James Budgell was chased by Finn, who’s very presence caused confusion between Braishfield's defender and keeper and the ball went through them both and into the net to make it 2-1 to the Bees at half-time.
The second half saw the Robins produce a few chances which weren’t taken, most noticeably a through ball from Pyke to Finn who rounded the keeper before a fine block to prevent a certain goal, and from the following Pyke corner, the ball was cleared off the line.
Ten minutes from full-time, the Robins got their reward though, with the ball won on the edge of the their own box, a fine move down the left side saw Finn played in before a half volley across the keeper levelled the score. With no further chances either way, the game finished 2-2.
